The Rex Foundation Supported by the Jerry Garcia Estate
The Jerry Garcia Estate has chosen the Rex Foundation as its designated charity to receive 5% of all proceeds from the sales of his merchandise on Zionrootswear.com. The Rex Foundation was established in the fall of 1983 and has granted over $8.6 million to over 1,000 well deserving individuals. It is named after Rex Jackson, a Grateful Dead roadie and later road manager until his untimely passing in 1976.
The Grateful Dead was always known for generous giving and the performance of benefit concerts. In the fall of 1983, the Rex Foundation was established as a non-profit charitable organization by members of the Grateful Dead and friends to further this tradition. The Rex Foundation enabled the Grateful Dead to go beyond responding to multiple requests for contributions to proactively providing extensive support for creative endeavors in the arts, sciences, and education. The first benefit concerts for the Rex Foundation were held in the spring of 1984 at the Marin Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. Since 1984 the Rex Foundation has granted nearly ten million dollars to over 1,000 recipients.
