As an author, Cedella Marley has more than proven her merit in multiple literary circles, especially in the realm of children's books. Her first published work was a collection of 56 sayings & psalms by her father which she carefully selected & organized into the book, "56 Thoughts". She meticulously choose appropriate words & thoughts from her father to soothe the reader's soul & penetrate the reader's mind. The book was enormously well received.
Shortly thereafter, her focus shifted towards children as the vehicle to spread Bob Marley's message & legacy of love. This was a natural progression in her career as an author & humanitarian; Bob's powerful message is simple at its core. It can be easily understood by children & become instilled in their developing value system. The most innocent mind is required to understand the most universal message. Cedella Marley had realized that fact, and as a result, found an ideal audience to carry on the legacy & the message of her father.
Her second literary work was a children's book entitled, "Three Little Birds". The book revolved around the lyrics & personal vision of Bob Marley's classic song "Three Little Birds". The book was a big hit due to a perfect recipe of rich vibrant illustrations, unique blending of media arts, & simply powerful lyrical text. The message of "Three Little Birds" is universal to readers of all ages. We all aspire to regain the innocence of faith that we knew only as children! The book has a soothing tone and combines various methods of literary delivery to convey its simple message of love & faith.
Her second children's book & third literary work focused on her father's life as a young boy in Jamaica. The book deals with pertinent social issues that children are facing today & Bob Marley faced as a young child, like the absence of a father. The book features distinct artful sketches that capture the unique landscape & culture of Nine Mile & Kingston in Jamaica during the time of Marley's childhood. In true humanitarian spirit, Cedella Marley's second children's book teaches her young audience valuable life lessons through the trials & tribulations of her father growing up in Jamaica.
Cedella Marley has a new children's book slated for a late October publication date. The book is aptly entitled, "One Love". It is based on the enormously popular song sung by her father and will be published by Chronicle Books. "One Love" has been highly anticipated due to her previous literary achievements. The basis of the work being one the most recognizable & successful Bob Marley songs of all time, "One Love", has added to the anticipation of its publication. The universality of its core message is unparalleled & will provide a perfect platform for Cedella to bring her father's beautiful lyrics to life for children all over the world. There is a positive vibe that permeates throughout the entire story, and the illustrations of Vanessa Newton are absolutely phenomenal! Cedella Marley's newest literary effort will teach kids an endearing & universal life lesson in a distinctly beautiful & clever children's book, "One Love".

Willie Nelson's Country Throwdown tour aims to compete for fans this summer by pairing heavyweight champ Nelson with a strong, all-day field of younger, edgy middleweights in support. Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser and Lee Brice are working their way up to a shot at the title every night while Craig Campbell, Brantley Gilbert, Drake White and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real get the crowd warmed up for the main event. Add to that a tent for singer-songwriters to test their skills, and you've got an event that keeps the punches flying. Each performer brought something unique to the event when it stopped just outside Nashville at the idyllic Woods of Fontanel Mansion on Friday (June 3).

Nelson's headlining show inspired reverence in the crowd as the stately icon took the stage and delivered the classics that made him famous. Many fans wore T-shirts from Nelson's previous tours, and when the huge Texas flag unfurled behind the 78-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member and he strummed the opening guitar riff to "Whiskey River," there was no doubt this was the Willie Nelson show they had come to know and love.

He took the stage with an easy-going and self-assured demeanor, making him seem almost like a politician greeting a group of supporters. Grabbing his guitar, he energetically flipped through songs like they were pages in a well-read book, but it never seemed that he was rushing through the show or merely going through the motions. Rather, Nelson's much-loved songs take center stage in place of today's special effects, so why not keep them coming? Some of the highlights included "Good Hearted Woman," "Crazy," "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground," "Beer for My Horses" and "On the Road Again."

The other advantage that keeps Willie the champ is his musicianship, and that of his band. Featuring players like Mickey Raphael on harmonica and his sister Bobbie on piano, Nelson's show lacks nothing in authentic country sounds. He uses just a snare drum for percussion instead of a whole drum kit. And Trigger, Nelson's battered and scarred Martin guitar, sounds as warm as ever during its nightly improvised solos and accompaniments. For this tour, his son Lukas also joins the band as a guitarist since the younger musician's own band, Promise of the Real, has an opening slot earlier in the day. At one point, Lukas stepped to the microphone for a swelling and receding cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Texas Flood." After a simple send off -- "We're glad y'all came out to see us!" -- Nelson's set culminated with a group singing of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "I'll Fly Away" that brought Johnson, Houser and some other friends back to the stage.

For his part, Johnson proved to be a crowd favorite. Stoic and subdued, he took the stage just before Nelson and proceeded to say everything he wanted to say through his songs. His only other words to the audience were in introducing his buddy, Houser, three-quarters of the way through the set for a defiant rendition of "Can't Cash My Checks" that actually seemed to connect with many in the crowd who discussed and admired Johnson's realness. His part of the show featured the biggest band of the night -- 10 pieces at one point -- and that resulted in the fullest sound as well. Guitars, fiddle, organ and an extra percussionist added to the texture. Many of his songs were drenched in steel guitar, like the weary sounding "That Lonesome Song" and a cheerfully (for Johnson) extended cover of Don Williams' "Tulsa Time." Other highlights included the down-trodden "High Cost of Living," Merle Haggard's "Misery and Gin" and Nelson's "Sad Songs and Waltzes Aren't Selling This Year," again featuring Lukas Nelson.

She appeared to be Johnson's daughter Kylee, and she stood off to the side with her own pint-sized microphone stand. Johnson looked on adoringly as she sang along, sometimes even topping his vocal power with her own. At the end of the song, they shared a long embrace, and she stuck around until the band took its thankful bow.

Mentioning he was fortunate enough to work on a few tribute albums in the past year, Houser launched into his contribution to Sweet Home Alabama: The Country Music Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Simple Man" was met with the loudest response of the night and featured Houser and his lead guitarist dueling in true Skynyrd fashion during the song's well-known instrumental breaks. Brice used his time on the main stage to play his hits "She Ain't Right" and Billboard's No. 1 country song of 2010, "Love Like Crazy." He also reminded the crowd he has had great luck in writing songs for other artists, proving his argument with "Crazy Girl" (recorded by the Eli Young Band) and "More Than a Memory" (a No. 1 for Garth Brooks in 2007).

Oh yeah, man -- utilizing pot! Legalize yeah, but what about utilizing? Getting high is a description, but remember the plant actually is a medicine. Remember all those drugs the pharmacy makes? Like Vicodin and all of these things. When you take Vicodin, do people say, "Oh, you take Vicodin just to get high," or "You're taking your Xanax to get high," or whatever drug your doctor prescribed. People don't talk about it like that, they talk about it like it's medicine. So when people talk about marijuana, "Oh, you're smoking it just to get high," there are people that smoke marijuana as medicine just as any other medicinal things that is given out by doctors. So the description of getting high is derogatory in a way because it pretends the plant is just bad. They are just painting it with a bad paintbrush as if everybody that smokes marijuana just get high and act stupid or whatever.

I mean cultures have been using this plant for thousands of years. It has been used for fiber, clothes, fuel. The American constitution was written on hemp, flags were made of hemp -- cannabis. And the herb has been used by cultures also as a spirituality thing. In my culture we use it as a medicine, too, in a concoction that my aunty used to make if an insect sting or bite us. Marijuana used to be an ingredient in that along with other herbs and seeds and stuff. We want to get to the idea of legalizing the plant and the whole spectrum of it. And utilizing it because we believe the plant is a very beneficial thing to the planet and to the people, nutritionally. It's so wild, I could talk for so long. It's for more than just smoking.
I would say, "Pot is a plant and in our classes we should teach what this plant is used for." Children should know that this plant has medicinal properties, that it can be used to make fibers that you wear, that the seeds are the most nutritional seeds in the vegetable kingdom and it has certain elements in it that is beneficial to your body if you eat the seeds. Children should know this; it's natural science, the science of nature.

This is not like you're teaching children about crack -- "This is how you make crack, kids: a piece of this, a piece of that, put x,y,z in it and then you mix it up in the lab." This is not that, this is nature. There's no complicated process in it. The tree is there, the fiber is there, the seed is there, the fruit is there, and it's used for all these things in history. In [America's] history. People should know that the constitution was written on paper that was made from cannabis, the American constitution. They should know that George Washington grew cannabis. But children should also know that you can misuse it and have ill effects just like everything else. I mean, everything I buy for my kids in the store, if it's a vitamin it says be careful. Children should know the truth -- the good and the bad.
The idea was to kind of take away the stigma of the plant by portraying the plant as a superhero. The hero is a metaphor for the plant. This superhero is from another planet and he comes here to seek a solution for the problems his planet is having, some environmental problems. And he finds out when he lands in this pot field that he feels a connection to the plant. And his DNA starts to change and he gains these superpowers.

I looked up Jim Mahfood -- who is the artist -- online, and his art was really different and cool, not typical like Marvel/DC art. It was different and that was cool. I wanted it to be different ... I was actually reading a comic book one day -- I read comic books every now and again, I go to the store and get some -- so I was reading this one with Batman and Superman. It was like a combination comic book. And there was this dialogue in it that was very familiar to me 'cause it had some lyrics from my father's song 'One Love.' And I was like, "Hol' on, who write this?" And when I turned to the front and looked for the writer it was Joe Casey. I was like, "OK, this is the right guy to use." Him understanding.

So we just work together. I gave them stuff and they did their thing and they showed me stuff and I said, "That's cool. That's good." It's an experience, the comic book is really an experience when you check out the physical copy. It's very cool
Obviously my father had his concept which I grew up with, but as we learn more we must evolve, we must understand how it really is. The evolution of it is to bring people together. And the way you bring people together is with love. Because people might hear you say something and them get turned off right away because them have a stigma about it. You might say "Rastafari" and people say, "What's this Rastafari thing? I don't like that -- I'm a Christian. Or I'm a Jew, or I'm a Muslim." But when we say "love" everybody can come into that. That is what it is really about. I say it is the evolution of the philosophy. So I approach it a little different from how my father would say it. These things must not just be about me. I must help. We have an independent label, which is what my father was working on. This is a fulfillment of his vision. It wasn't just about Bob Marley records at the time. Everybody used to come to the studio and stuff like that. So following that example I want to establish something that is real and not just my thing alone. It must be something that is respectful of the vision my father had. What I want to focus on is the history of the music. That is something I'm interested in because I think especially in Jamaican the younger generation I don't think is exposed enough to the history of the music. I want to pay respect to that.

Ziggy Marley was in attendance for the unveiling of the new Bob Marley Exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Wednesday, May 11th. The Bob Marley Exhibit was opened to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the legend's untimely passing and was made possible with the generosity of the Marley family by lending some very rare memorabilia from their personal collection. One of the most significant Bob Marley pieces on display is his primary guitar, a modified mahogany Gibson Les Paul. This historical guitar is a permanent part of the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica.

"That was his baby," Ziggy Marley said. "That was his weapon. That's what he held closest to him on stage, off stage. It's made of wood, it's natural. Some of Bob's sweat, whatever, is in that wood, that guitar."

The exhibit offers a wonderful look into the legacy of Bob Marley that includes an embroidered blue denim jacket worn on stage by Bob, candid photographs, old concert posters and albums. There are music clips as well as video footage on display. The exhibit has a very unique interactive aspect featuring drum machines that give visitors the opportunity to play along with Bob's songs. The Bob Marley Exhibit will be open to the public at the Grammy Museum through October 2nd. If you're in the Los Angeles area, don't miss a chance to get an authentic glimpse into the life and music of Bob Marley.

1. Ambush In the Night- A landmark narrative recounting the attempt on his life in 1976. I was in DC this past week at ALA's annual meeting/conference for librarians, authors, illustrators, bloggers, publishers, and editors. (Yep, I slipped in bloggers 'cause we love it too!) I was thrilled to attend Marilyn Singer and Barbara Genco's seventh annual Poetry Blast!, and Tony Medina was one of the featured poets. (ETA: read Laura Salas's post here to get tips she picked up with some serious note-taking and see her photos of the poets.) He read a few poems from this fabulous book and it was awesome to hear him. I was completely star-struck to be in attendance at this amazing event. A bunch of us went to dinner afterward at Zaytinya (OMG Delicious and gluten free for me!!!) I got a chance to sit and chat with him. I was gushing over the book and telling how I had blogged about it and my boys and I love it... etc. etc. Then I came home and looked up the blog post to re-read what I had said... and I couldn't find one. Wha? Didn't I blog it on a Poetry Friday this past winter? or Spring? No? How can that be? We love this book!!!! OMG I met Tony Medina and lied to his face about blogging his book!!!!

Now I have to blog a public confession. We really do love this book. And I swear my boys and I have read it dozens of times and they adore it. Tony has completely captured the rhythms and cadence of Bob Marley in his poems. So much so that I have to jump up and find my iPod and put some Marley on every time we read it... which is a lot...

At the Poetry Blast Medina read from "My Heart the Island":

Mama just a caramel country girl shy as can be
and Papa many many years older than she

Papa is a white man so I've been told
My face a map of Africa in Europe's hold...

His voice was powerful and passionate. The poem itself brings one a strong feeling of the longing and love in young Marley's heart as he is left with Mama "alone to scrape and fuss..." Watson's vibrant, evocative paintings of the family divided, with Mama and young boy on one side of the text and Papa riding off into the sunset on a horse washed with gold on the far side of the next page, perfectly accents and extends the poem. The room responded with a hush, a gasp, and then resounding applause.

The poem from this collection that I would like to share with you for Friday Poetry is part of this one:

I Am a Rasta Man

A troubadour for the common man
Singing what a Rasta sings

Reggae music from
My guitar strings

Rasta man lyrics
Of peace and love...

Look for the book I and I Bob Marley to read more of this wonderful poem and enjoy the stunning illustrations.
